Bleeding or Loose Gums

Causes, risk factors and treatment for bleeding gums.

Do your gums bleed when you brush or floss? It can be a sign of gum disease. Here we explain causes, risk factors and treatment.

Causes of Bleeding Gums

The most common cause of bleeding gums is plaque and bacteria that accumulate along the gum line. When plaque is not removed, inflammation (gingivitis) develops, which can progress to periodontitis — a more serious gum disease that can lead to tooth loss.

Risk Factors

  • Medical conditions: Diabetes, autoimmune diseases and certain medications can increase the risk
  • Inconsistent flossing: Without daily cleaning between teeth, plaque builds up
  • Genetics: Some people are more predisposed to gum disease than others
  • Irregular dental visits: Without professional cleaning, tartar can build up
  • Smoking: Smoking is one of the biggest risk factors for gum disease

Treatment

Treatment for gum disease starts with a thorough deep cleaning with anaesthesia. The dentist or hygienist removes tartar and bacteria below the gum line. In severe cases, multiple treatments may be needed.

After treatment, good home hygiene is essential: brush twice daily, use floss or interdental brushes, and attend regular check-ups.
