Frequently asked questions

How much does an emergency dentist / dental emergency cost in Oslo?

An emergency examination at Tøyen Tannlegevakt costs NOK 799 and includes X-rays and consultation. Treatment comes in addition and typically costs between NOK 1,200 and NOK 2,500. You always receive a price estimate before treatment begins.

Are evenings, weekends or holidays more expensive?

No. At Tøyen Tannlegevakt you pay the same price regardless of the time of day — including evenings, Saturdays and Sundays. We are open every day of the year.

What is the difference between public and private emergency dental care in Oslo?

The public emergency dental clinic at Aker Hospital is reserved for groups entitled to free or reduced dental treatment from Oslo Municipality — including children under 19, elderly in institutions, and persons with intellectual disabilities. At Tøyen Tannlegevakt we accept patients who do not qualify under the public scheme. We are a private emergency dental clinic with extensive experience in acute dental problems, open every day of the year.

Do you accept drop-ins or do I need an appointment?

We recommend booking an appointment so we can set aside time for you, but we accept drop-ins when capacity allows. Call +47 22 19 18 00 first so we can give you the fastest possible appointment, or you can easily book an appointment online.

What is the wait time?

We always offer same-day appointments when capacity allows. If you book online you secure your time slot. With drop-in, expect to wait between 30 minutes and 1 hour depending on capacity.

What should I do for acute toothache before coming in?

Rinse your mouth with lukewarm salt water and take regular painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. Avoid very hot or cold foods. You can read more on our website using our symptom checker.

Can I get HELFO reimbursement at the emergency dentist?

HELFO covers part of the treatment for surgical tooth removal, periodontal disease, dental trauma from accidents, rare medical conditions, and tooth wear from grinding or acid damage. We submit the reimbursement claim directly to HELFO on your behalf when treatment is eligible.

Do you speak English?

Yes, our dentists and reception speak English. We have a dedicated English version of the website at toyentannlegevakt.no/en.

When should I seek emergency dental care — and when can I wait?

Seek emergency dental care for severe pain, swelling, bleeding that does not stop, a broken or knocked-out tooth, dental abscess, or after trauma to the face. Milder issues (light sensitivity, a lost filling without pain) can wait, but we still recommend getting it checked to avoid worsening and higher costs later.

What kind of anaesthesia do you use?

All emergency treatments are performed with local anaesthesia so that you are pain-free. Our dentists have additional expertise in dental anxiety and adapt the pace and approach to your needs.
