Teeth Whitening

Everything you need to know about teeth whitening — methods, price, results and tips from experienced dentists.

Teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments. At Tøyen Tannlegevakt, we offer professional teeth whitening that delivers visible results and a naturally brighter smile.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a process where a bleaching agent (usually hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) breaks down colour pigments in the tooth enamel. The result is lighter, whiter teeth. The treatment does not remove plaque or tartar — it is purely a cosmetic procedure.

Over time, teeth can become discoloured due to coffee, tea, red wine, smoking and certain foods. Teeth whitening reverses this discolouration and restores the teeth's natural whiteness.

Whitening methods

We offer two main methods for teeth whitening:

  • In-office whitening: The dentist applies a concentrated bleaching agent directly to the teeth. The treatment takes approximately 60–90 minutes and delivers immediate results.
  • At-home whitening with trays: We create custom whitening trays that you use at home with a milder bleaching agent. The treatment takes 1–2 weeks with daily use of 30–60 minutes.

Both methods are safe and effective. In-office whitening provides faster results, while at-home whitening offers more gradual effect and maintenance options.

How long does whitening last?

Results typically last between 6 months and 2 years, depending on lifestyle and oral hygiene. Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking can cause faster discolouration. With good oral hygiene and regular maintenance whitening, you can significantly extend the results.

Side effects and precautions

The most common side effects are temporary tooth sensitivity and mild gum irritation. These symptoms are mild and usually disappear within a few days after treatment.

Teeth whitening is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, people under 18, or patients with untreated cavities or gum disease. The dentist will perform an examination before treatment.

Who can get whitening?

Most adults with healthy teeth and gums can undergo teeth whitening. Note that crowns, fillings and veneers do not change colour with whitening. If you have visible restorations in your front teeth, you should discuss this with the dentist beforehand.
